One of the earliest and most attractive colour-plate books on fungi. This is a large and particularly finely coloured copy. Schaeffer (1718-1790) was a Bavarian botanist, zoologist, and clergyman who wrote a number of books on natural history, of which this is the most important. It was one of the first attempts at documenting the fungal flora of a region. Most of the plates reproduce a spore print for each species, probably the first time that this aid in identification was used in mycological illustration. The plates in the first two volumes are not double-sided as described by Stafleu, but either have text on the verso, or are blank. The remainder of the plates are mostly double-sided.
Stafleu TLI 10476; Nissen BBI 1744.
