Hofker, Jan. Gedachten en Verbeeldingen. Met Inleiding van L. van Deyssel. Amsterdam, S.L. van Looy 1906; First Edition; [one of 50 de-luxe copies] on Dutch mould-made paper of Van Gelder Zonen, with a portrait (: etching) of the author by W[illem] W[itsen] and bound in vellum with decorations and lettering in batik technique, stamped in gold, also text ornaments [all after the design of Th. Nieuwenhuis], this copy in full RED-COLOURED vellum with decoration and lettering in black; a.e.g.; an uncommon and splendid copy! € 9250
The text ornaments differ from the copies on ordinary paper. In most cases copies batiked on uncoloured vellum are seen (a copy will be shown and is available on the fair). Decorations and lettering might be in different colours: we know of copies with brown, and also with blue. No copy is exactly the same owing to the batik technique. Nothing is known yet about the executor of the design, it might have been Nieuwenhuis himself. Pencil lines setting out the decoration scheme are slightly visible under the red surface; in the uncoloured vellum copies these lines are (of course) removed.

Zesen, Philip von. Beschreibung der Stadt Amsterdam. Amsterdam, Joachim Noschen 1664; 4to; with an engraved titlepage and 71 (of 72) double-page (except one) engravings (some folding) + one in the text, of plans, views, buildings; contemporary vellum, marked 1664 with a few wormholes, but in general a very fine copy with blank margins. € 2250
The binder must have been mistaken in placing the '2 Aftekeningen van het Kasteel' before p.184 instead of p.148, and so the 'Aftekening van de oude en nieuwe rooying der Stadt' (see Nijhoff-Van Hattem) is lacking. Two plates are loose; text with some browning as usual.

Added: some letters and documents (26) to and from Van Steen re Elsschot, like 10 letters (1961- 72) by Adèle Kelner, De Ridder´s eldest daughter preparing a publication of a selection of letters (these letters in the AMVC); and one leaf with a typescript by Elsschot describing Peter van Steen´s attitude (11 lines) and a very critical handwritten addition by Gerard Walschap (9 lines), signed.Peter van Steen, penname of P. Mourits (1904-1972), author of social novels, good friend of Elsschot since 1937 and one of his main correspondents according to his biographer and editor of his letters Vic v.d.Reijt (the letters to Peter van Steen are published in his edition from our copies); the others were Jan Greshoff and Andries Kaas. Though Van Steen was active in the resistance movement and published several volumes of poetry illegaly during the occupation (see De Jong) especially on the fate of the Dutch jews - he too was a good friend of Jacques Presser - he did not react negatively to Borms like so many others. It might be that he shared Elsschot's feeling for any underdog in any period. | |||
