(1st ed. 1798) of the report about the first British mission (1793-94) to the emperor of China. The fine engrs. depict views of Beijing, Chengde, Dinghai, Linqing, Tianjin, Xuzhou e.o., receptions, customs, costumes, ships, punishments etc. Tear in 1 fold. plan and sm. tear in blanc margin of p. 167 (vol. 1) repaired, otherwise fine almost spotless set in an elegant binding.

One of 550 copies of the 1st ed. Nissen IVB 563; Anker 308; Zimmer 399. Originally published in 36 instalments from 1885 up to 1897. The zenith of the iconographical description of the birds of the British Isles. (Anker p. 58). Partly a little foxed, spines discoloured. A very good copy of a magnificent work.
